The Banaras Hindu University invites applications for admission to programmes leading to Doctor of Philosophy/Vidyavaridhi Degree in various disciplines for registration in September 2009 (July 2009 for faculties of Agriculture and Engineering and Technology) and March 2010 (January 2010 for faculties of Agriculture and Engineering and Technology) semesters.

Registration shall be done as per norms decided by the Academic Council of the University from time to time, provided the result of the qualifying examination. is declared on or before the start of counseling for admission to a semester. The admission to the said programme shall be
(a) through the Common Research Entrance Test (CRET) to be conducted at Varanasi on 12th July’ 09 and
(b) directly for the CRET exempted categories

Admission to following disciplines shall be open to those students only who have qualified GATE and they possess valid GATE Score card or they are NET-Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)/ NET-Lecturer Ship (LS) qualified. Thus no CRET shall be conducted for admission to following disciplines.

QUALIFYING EXAMINATION AND MINIMUM PERCENTAGE OF MARKS:


A candidate shall be required to have:
(a-1) passed the qualifying examination securing the minimum percentage of marks and a minimum of 50 marks in Academic Record as per details given below:

Note: (i) Any degree mentioned under the qualifying examination for each Faculty in the following pertains to the degree awarded by this University or any other University established by law for the time being in force or any other degree recognized as equivalent thereto in that subject.

I. Faculties of Arts, Visual Arts, Social Sciences, Science:

(a) Qualifying Examination: (i) Master’s degree in the concerned subject OR (ii) Masters degree in any one of the allied subjects pertaining to the discipline as per the list given in the Appendix - I.

(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.



II. Faculty of Performing Arts
1. For admission to Ph. D programme in all departments:


(a) Qualifying Examination: (i) M.Mus. OR M.A. in Music OR (ii) Master’s Degree in any subject and having passed any one of the following examinations:

(a) Qualifying Examination: Master’s degree OR M. Phil. in Musicology
(b) Qualifying Marks: With Master’s degree in Musicology: At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination. With M. Phil. in Musicology: At least 65% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

III. Sanskrit Vidya Dharm Vigyan

(a) (i) Qualifying Examination: Acharya degree in the concerned subject OR (ii) Acharya or equivalent degree in any one of the allied subjects pertaining to the department as per the list given in the Appendix - I.

(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

IV. Faculty of Commerce

(a) Qualifying Examination: Master’s degree in Commerce (M.Com.)/Finance and Control (M.F.C.)/ Business Management (M.B.M.) OR in allied areas namely, M.A. in Economics/ Psychology, Chartered Accountancy (C.A.) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Costs & Works Accountancy of the Institute of Costs & Works Accountants of India (I.C.W.A.I.), the Company Secretaryship of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (I.C.S.I.).
(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.


V. Faculty of Management Studies

(a) Qualifying Examination: Master’s degree in Business Management (M.B.M.), Management Studies/ Management Sciences (M.M.S.), Business Administration (M.B.A.), International Business Administration (M.I.B.A.), International Business (M.I.B.) OR Two years postgraduate diploma in Management from any one of the Indian Institutes of Management (I.I.Ms) or Xavier Labour Relations Institute (X.L.R.I.), Jamshedpur or Management Development Institute (M.D.I.), Gurgoan or Institute of Management and Technology (I.M.T.), Ghaziabad or Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (I.I.F.T.), New Delhi or International Management Institute (I.M.I.), New Delhi.
(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

VI. Faculty of Law

(a) Qualifying Examination: Bachelor’s/ Master’s Degree in Law.
(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination, where Master’s degree is the qualifying examination OR At least 60% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.



VII. Faculty of Education

(a) Qualifying Examination: M.Ed./M.A. (Education)/ Master’s degree in Special Education [M.Ed. (Spl.)] OR Master’s degree in Psychology/ Sociology/ Economics.
(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.


VIII. Faculty of Engineering & Technology

(a) Qualifying Examinations: (i) Bachelor’s/ Master’s degree in the concerned branch of engineering OR (ii) Bachelor’s/ Master’s degree in Pharmacy for admission to the Ph. D. programme in the Department of Pharmaceutics OR (iii) M.A./M.Sc. in the concerned subject for admission to the Ph. D. programme in the Departments of Applied Chemistry, Applied Mathematics and Applied Physics. OR (iv) The qualification in any one of the allied subjects pertaining to the department/ school/ discipline as per the details given in the Appendix - II.

(b) Qualifying Marks: (i) At least 60% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination, with Master’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Pharmacy or equivalent as qualifying examination. OR (ii) At least 70% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination, with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Pharmacy or equivalent as qualifying examination. OR (iii) At least 60% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination, with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Pharmacy or equivalent as qualifying examination and having a minimum of 2 years of experience in research/industry/ teaching in the relevant area. OR (iv) A minimum of 5 years of experience in research/R & D organization in a technical capacity and sponsorship by the organization with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Pharmacy or equivalent as qualifying examination. OR (v) At least 60% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination, with Master’s degree in Science/ Business Management/ Agriculture as qualifying examination. OR (vi) At least 60% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination, with M.D./M.S as qualifying examination.

IX. Faculty of Agriculture

(a) Qualifying Examination: (i) Master’s degree in Science/Agriculture (M.Sc./ M.Sc (Ag.) in the concerned subject OR (ii) Master’s degree in Science/Agriculture (M.Sc./ M.Sc (Ag.) in any one of the allied subjects pertaining to the department as per the list given in the Appendix - I. (iii) M. Sc. in Statistics OR M. Sc. (Ag.)/M. Sc. in Agricultural Statistics for Admission in Ph. D. in Agricultural Statistics.

(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.


X. Faculty of Medicine

(a) Qualifying Examination: (i) Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)/ Master of Surgery (M.S.)/ Doctoratus of Medicinus (D.M.)/ Magister Chirurgiae (M.Ch.)/ Diplomate of National Board (D.N.B) in the concerned subject recognized by the Medical Council of India. OR (ii) M.Sc. in the concerned subject OR (iii) Master’s degree in any one of the allied subjects pertaining to the discipline as per the details given in the Appendix - I.

(c) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination (wherever the marks/grades are awarded).







XI. Faculty of Ayurveda

(a) Qualifying Examination: (i) M.D.(Ay.)/ M.S.(Ay.) recognized by Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM). OR (ii) Master’s degree in any one of the allied subjects pertaining to the discipline as per the list given in the Appendix - I.
(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.


XII. Faculty of Dental Sciences

(a) Qualifying Examination: Master’s Degree in Dental Surgery.
(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination (wherever the marks/grades are awarded).

(a-2) RELAXATION IN MINIMUM PERCENTAGE OF MARKS/ACADEMIC RECORD FOR Scheduled Castes (SC)/Scheduled Tribes (ST) / Physically Challenged (PC) / OTHER BACKWARD CLASSES (OBC) CANDIDATES: There shall be a relaxation of 5% marks (or equivalent grade point average) for SC/ST and PC candidates in the minimum marks required in the qualifying examination. The minimum marks required for SC/ST and PC candidates in the Academic Record shall be 45 and for OBC candidates 47.50, respectively. However, a Physically Challenged (PC), SC/ST/OBC candidate shall not get the double benefit of being SC/ST/ OBC as well as PC candidate in the above relaxations.

DIRECT ADMISSION (Without appearing in CRET)

A candidate who fulfils one of the following requirements may be considered for direct admission to the Ph. D. programme without appearing in the CRET:
(i) A candidate who has qualified National Eligibility Test as NET-JRF/NET-LS/GATE. However, candidates possessing NET-LS/GATE only shall not be eligible for BHU fellowship. In case NET-LS/GATE possessee wish to obtain BHU fellowship they will be required to appear in CRET and get themselves admitted as CRET candidate on merit.

(ii) Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering (GATE / NET) for admission to disciplines under Faculty of Engineering and Technology only.


(iii) A candidate who is a recipient of National Doctoral Fellowship or other fellowships from government/semi-government organizations such as Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Ayurveda Yoga Unani Siddha Homeopathy (AYUSH) and similar national-level organizations awarded through an All India selection procedure conducted by the agency/ organization concerned (candidates selected in the research project funded by such organizations shall not be considered under CRET exempted category).

(iv) A candidate who is selected under Quality Improvement Program (QIP) of AICTE, Faculty Development Programme (FDP) of a State Government or of UGC.


(v) A candidate who is sponsored as a full-time candidate by any other university/ institution/college/ government department/ public sector undertaking/ R & D organization/ private industry, who is relieved on study leave for a period of not less than two years for pursuing Ph.D. programme in a Department/ School of the University.

(vi) A foreign national who is a recipient of fellowship by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Government of India and is sponsored by his/her government.


(vii) A self-financing foreign national who is admitted through the Embassies/High commission of his/her country after getting approval from the Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India and no objection certificate from the Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India or admitted under an MoU.


Note: 1.
The equivalence of the Degree possessed by the foreign candidates belonging to the categories at (vi) and (vii) above, shall be settled by the equivalence committee of the concerned faculty before their admission. They shall be admitted to the Ph.D. programme only if the degree possessed by them entitles them for enrolment as Ph. D. scholars in the universities of their own countries.

2. The supernumerary seats for foreign nationals shall be restricted to a maximum of 15% of the total available seats in a Department/ School.

(viii) A candidate who is already registered as a Ph.D. scholar in some other university and whose supervisor joins this University.

(ix) A candidate who is sponsored as a part-time candidate by a non-degree awarding institution/ government department/ public sector undertaking/ R & D organization/ private industry, who shall work for his/her Ph. D in his/her parent organization fulfilling the residency period requirement prescribed in the relevant ordinances. Such a candidate is required to submit a sponsorship and work experience certificate from the parent organization. The non-degree awarding institutions, government departments, public sector undertakings, R & D organizations and the private industries are only those, which are recognized as centers of research by the University as specified in the related Ordinances.


(x) A teacher of this University or of the constituent/affiliated colleges of this University holding substantive post (including those on probation).

(xi) A non-teaching employee of this University holding substantive post including those on probation.


(xii) Candidates holding P.G. Degree (D.M. /M.Ch.) in super-specialty subjects in the departments of Faculty of Medicine.

(xiii) ‘Research Scientist’ working in this University shall be eligible for applying under CRET exempted category.


However, all the exempted candidates must apply in the prescribed CRET Application Form in order to be eligible for consideration for admission. The applications of the candidates belonging to the categories (iii) to (xiii) above shall be routed through proper channel.


WRITTEN TEST:


1. A candidate possessing the minimum qualifications with the requisite percentage of marks and academic record, as mentioned at Section B, shall be eligible to appear in the written test. In addition, a Senior Resident/Service Senior Resident of the Faculties of Medicine, Ayurveda and Dental Sciences shall also be eligible to appear in the written test, subject to fulfilling other eligibility conditions.


2. There shall be separate tests for each Faculty (except for the Faculty of Engineering & Technology).


The test shall be of 2 hours duration, carrying 300 marks, consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions.

either on cash payment of Rs.50/- (Fifty) only from 11 AM to 3 PM on working days OR by registered post by sending a written request mentioning: name, postal address & details of crossed MICR Demand Draft/Bankers Cheque along with : (i) A crossed MICR Demand Draft/Banker�s Cheque issued by any Nationalized/Scheduled Bank for Rs.100/- (One Hundred) only in favour of the CONTROLLER OF EXAMINATIONS, BANARAS HINDU UNIVERSITY, payable at Varanasi, (ii) A self-addressed unstamped envelope of the size 32cm x 26cm.

NOTE: (1)
Application Processing/Test Fee shall be payable along with the filled up application form as per details in the Information Bulletin.
(2) Only MICR Demand Draft/Bankers Cheque is acceptable.
(3) Foreign nationals are exempted from appearing in CRET and are required to contact the International Centre, C/3/3, Tagore House, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi 221 005 for further details.

(5) Application Form- incomplete and/or received after the last date, shall not be accepted.
(6) University shall not be responsible for any delay/loss of application form in postal transit/courier.
Incomplete Application Form, not properly documented and Application Form received after the prescribed last date shall not be accepted.
