Northern Arizona University's Organization for Graduate Students of English invites you to participate in the 2010 Peaks Conference, which will be held February 4th, 5th, and 6th at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. This year’s theme is “Expanding Parameters: Exploring Paradigms, Paradoxes, and Parallels.”

We welcome submissions for presentations, panels, roundtables, strands, and pedagogical demonstrations.

Submission instructions for paper and panel/roundtable proposals:
1.) For individual papers, please submit:
- An abstract (250 words maximum)
- Include your name, phone number, and email address.

2.) For panels and roundtables, please submit
- A proposal abstract for the panel/roundtable (250 words maximum)

CfA: Balkan Case Challenge 2010 Student Competition and Recruitment

World University Service Austria invites exceptional students of law, economics, political sciences, international relations, information technologies or related disciplines to take part in the BCC 2010.

The first stage of the competition will take place in the weekend of April 24th-25th 2010 in Bucharest. The winners will receive the chance to participate in the finals of the BCC 2010 International Case Study Competition, in July 6th-11th 2010 in Vienna, along with peers from 11 other countries from Central and South-Eastern Europe. All expenses for both stages are covered by WUS Austria.

At both competition levels students participate in one of the four academic disciplines:

- Business Case Competition
- Model European Council
- Law Moot Court
- ICT Case Competition

In addition, the Balkan Case Challenge facilitates recruitment during both stages of the competition, where students present themselves to potential employers and representatives of international companies get the chance to recruit future staff from the region.

The competition is open to all Romanian students studying in Romania or abroad and to students of other nationalities studying in Romania. They must be enrolled in a university degree program (BA, MA, MBA, PhD etc.) and under the age of 28 at the time of applying. CRESC PhD Studentship 2010-12, Univ. of Manchester UK

The ESRC Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change (CRESC) intends to fund a doctoral studentship for a period of three years from September 2010. The student will be supervised by a team of 2 or 3 supervisors from amongst the Manchester Research Associates and Directors (see the website for further details). The successful student will be based at the Manchester CRESC offices, and will be expected to spend up to six hours a week supporting CRESC in an administrative and/or research capacity. The student will benefit from working in a dedicated research
environment where they can liaise with numerous active researchers linked to CRESC themes.

One fully funded PhD studentships is currently available, covering the standard home/EU fee for 2010/2011 entry plus an annual stipend of £13,290 , payable in four instalments, and £750 research training grant per annum. The successful candidate will
* Have an excellent undergraduate degree (minimum 2:1) in any of the disciplinary areas which are involved in CRESC (Business Studies, Social Anthropology, Sociology, Women's Studies)
* Have completed a research training Masters (with a minimum overall average of 60%) in concordance with the expectations of the ESRC
* Have interests in any of the six CRESC themes (see www.cresc.ac.uk for details)

It is also hoped that candidates will
* Study a topic of interdisciplinary significance involving an interdisciplinary supervisory team
* Have both methodological and theoretical interests in CRESC research beyond their specific research topics.

Job description

The postdoc position is part of the larger research framework that addresses 'The Transformation of the Religious Field since 1800'. Preference will be given to candidates whose research focuses on the relationship between modernization and religion. Projects may investigate discursive changes in the status of religion in Western societies, interactions between religious systems and other systems (such as the natural sciences, philosophy, politics, law, art, etc.), or related dynamics of modernization. The candidate will need to hold a PhD in the Academic Study of Religion or in a related discipline. She/he will have demonstrated high-standing academic skills in her/his PhD dissertation and in subsequent publications, and she/he will have an international network of scholarly contacts.The candidate will be
expected to contribute to the research activities in the Department of Religious Studies of the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, as well as to applications for research grants on national and international levels. She/he may also be asked to contribute to teaching in the BA and MA program.

Requirements

Graduate Fellowships in Sustainability Science - Resilience and Adaptation Program (RAP), University Of Alaska Fairbanks

Applications are invited by RAP for PhD and masters degree fellowships. PhD fellowships provide $30,000 per year stipend, tuition waiver, health insurance, international internship travel funding, and a computer. Fellowships for the masters degree offer the same with a lower stipend.

The Resilience and Adaptation Program is an interdisciplinary graduate program, focusing on global-to-local sustainability in times of rapid change. Resilience, vulnerability, adaptation, and transformation of social-ecological systems serve as central concepts in exploring societal challenges in a changing world. RAP integrates natural and social sciences, engineering, and medicine to discover innovative and
effective strategies for adaptation. Alaska, northern regions, and other areas provide the basis for “basic” and “applied” research in climate change, food security, adaptive co-management of ecosystem services, indigenous resilience, alternative energy, and rural-urban issues. The program currently includes a community of 45 graduate students and faculty from across the UAF campus. RAP PhD fellowships are funded through the Integrative Graduate Education and Research
Traineeship (IGERT) Program of the US National Science Foundation. RAP prepares students for positions of leadership in academia, research institutes, government agencies, non-government organizations, and indigenous organizations. The core curriculum of RAP involves coursework in theory and methods, an international internship experience, thesis research, and participation in special seminars, workshops, and conferences. RAP builds on existing graduate programs at UAF in ecology, biology and wildlife, natural resources management, indigenous studies, anthropology, resource economics, political science, geology, geophysics, engineering, interdisciplinary studies, and other relevant disciplines to address sustainability using a systems framework. Minorities are encouraged to apply.

RAP offers:
- IGERT Fellowships available only to U.S. PhD students;

The Center for Philosophy of Religion at the University of Notre Dame announces up to five fellowships for the 2010 - 2011 academic year: the Alvin Plantinga Fellowship ($60,000), awarded to a distinguished senior scholar; up to two Research Fellowships ($40,000 - $50,000, depending on rank); the Frederick J. Crosson Fellowship ($45,000) reserved for foreign scholars and those outside the field of philosophy; and one Visiting Graduate Fellowship ($18,000) awarded to a graduate student in philosophy who is working on a dissertation in the philosophy of religion and who would profit from spending a year at the Center. All Fellows will receive up to $2,000 reimbursement for moving expenses, as well as up to $2,000 for research-related expenses. The Plantinga Fellow and the Research Fellows may have the option of teaching one course in philosophy per semester as well. Those who do teach receive up to an additional $7,500 annually.

University of Maine - Sustainability Solutions Initiative Postdoctoral Fellows Program

The University of Maine is launching a national search for Postdoctoral Sustainability Science Fellows. The successful candidates will join a new Sustainability Solutions Initiative (SSI) funded by a 5-year, $20 million NSF EPSCoR grant.

SSI includes a team of 30 faculty from a range of disciplines and multiple academic institutions statewide. SSI's transformative research program integrates coupled natural and human systems modeling, stakeholder engagement, and solutions-oriented research activities. Organized under a theme of landscape change, SSI supports multiple research projects focused on urbanization, forest ecosystem management, and climate change. Collectively, these projects speak to various sustainability science challenges and present a unique opportunity to advance the field of sustainability science. A major thrust of SSI is to produce a new generation of scientists who are
equipped to work across disciplinary boundaries and adept at collaborative, problem-solving work that spans research and practice.

SSI is recruiting a cohort of 4 Postdoctoral Fellows with tentative start dates ranging from February 2010 to April 2010. These initial appointments will be for a one-year duration with an opportunity for renewal. Concurrent SSI recruitment initiatives are seeking applications for 20 to 25 Doctoral Fellows and 4 faculty positions.

Responsibilities: As a cohort, the 4 Postdoctoral Fellows will serve an integrative function to the overall SSI. We seek postdoctoral fellows who can align themselves with one or more ongoing research teams and are willing to assume broader, integrative research responsibilities. The postdoctoral fellows will be expected to
participate in ongoing team projects and SSI-wide research activities, such as statewide sustainability problem assessments within the areas of urbanization, forest ecosystem management, climate change, and stakeholder engagement. Core research responsibilities will include planning and completion of research projects, preparation of manuscripts for publication in collaboration with SSI researchers, and
presentation of research findings at public and professional meetings. The cohort will also have the opportunity to contribute to the development and implementation of SSI curricula and mentoring programs for graduate and undergraduate students.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. with specialization in biological or earth sciences, communication, engineering, mathematics, natural resource management, public policy, social sciences or a closely related technical or scientific discipline is required by the time of appointment. Preference will be given to candidates with experience
working on interdisciplinary research teams.

The Center for Historical Research brings together faculty, students, and the general public to examine the historical foundation and development of critical issues of global importance. The Center offers resident fellowships for senior and junior faculty, as well as those completing dissertations. We also invite members of the academic community and independent scholars to make presentations at our seminars.

For the academic years 2009-2011, we are studying, "The Intersection of Diaspora, Immigration, and Gender in World History." We believe that a gendered analysis of group migrations may reveal new patterns in diaspora and immigration history, shed light on specific migrations, and bridge the historiographical gap between diaspora and immigration histories. A gendered analysis of group migrations may help us better differentiate the meaning of forced and voluntary migrations, and the processes by which people maintained, discarded, and transformed their cultures, and their host cultures.

For the 2010-2011 academic year we are conducting a fellowship competition and seeking presenters whose research falls in the period from the19th century to the present. We invite scholars from all disciplines, studying any peoples and geographic area(s) relevant to our program. CLAKE Junior Research Fellowship in American Politics or History

The Governing Body invites applications from graduates of any university for election to the Clake Junior Research Fellowship in American Politics or History. The successful candidate will take up the Fellowship on 1 October 2010.

Junior research fellowships are intended to support those at an early stage of their academic careers, and will normally be awarded to candidates who have recently completed their doctoral research, or are close to completion. Candidates must not have accumulated more than six years in full-time postgraduate study of research, nor have already held a research fellowship elsewhere.

The basic stipend of the Fellowship, which is pensionable under the Universities Superannuation Scheme, is currently £17,092. The Fellow will be entitled to free rooms in College (or in approved cases to an allowance of £3,444 in lieu), and to free meals in College. The Fellow may, with the leave of the Governing Body, engage in teaching up to a maximum of six hours weekly and, if teaching, would normally be
expected to give priority to the College's own teaching needs.

PhD position in Energy Technology with special emphasis on Electric Power Engineering at Luleå University of Technology

Electric power engineering at Luleå University of Technology, Skellefteå Campus, see link below, is a small but very successful group that is specialized among others in power quality and power-line communication. The group is among the leading groups worldwide in power quality and has initiated several new research directions within this area. Integration of windpower in the electric power system is one of those directions where the group is leading new initiatives both in Sweden and in the rest of the world.

We are looking for a PhD student for an industry-sponsored project on harmonics and windpower. The project is part of the VindForsk program, see link below. The aim of the project is to map the various harmonic issues related with increasing amounts of windpower connected to the power system. The project consists of a combination of measurements and simulations. The measurements will be performed in cooperation with Skellefteå Kraft; cooperation with over network operators, windpower producers and manufacturers is also part of the project.

The main work is to be conducted at Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå

Qualifications and bases of assessment

Degree of Master of Science in Engineering or Degree of Master of Science (One Year)/ Degree of Master of Science (Two Years) with a specialisation suitable for the research in Electric Power Engineering (e.g. Electronics, Energy Engineering, Engineering Physics or similar specialisations). PhD Position in Material Mechanics at Luleå University of Technology

The research within the Division of Material Mechanics ranges from simulation and modelling of chains of manufacturing processes, individual processes to material modelling. This can support the integrated design of manufacturing process and product. Of particular interest is material modelling as it is crucial when simulating manufacturing processes as they often cause changes in the material structure and corresponding changes in the material response. Physical based models and particularly multiscale models for the material behaviour can also support the design of materials for improved mechanical properties.

Available research project:

Optimisation of Induction Heating Process

The aim for this project is to develop optimisation strategies and tools for simulation driven design pertaining to induction heating processes used in applications for hot forming as well as heat treatment in welded aerospace components. Developed tools will consist of one simpler tool to evaluate the technical possibility to apply induction heating for a given case in the early design phase. The other is a more advanced optimisation tool. This part of the project will utilise developments in an on-going project at the division Material Mechanics where induction heating models are developed. The work is also part of the Faste Laboratory at Ltu.

Qualifications

The PhD candidates should have 240 credits of which 60 credits on an advanced level within Mechanical engineering, Applied physics, Civil engineering or equivalent. The candidates should also be excellent in written and oral communication in Swedish or in English. Knowledge about FEM and/or advanced computational and optimisation methods is a merit as well as a high quality and relevant student diploma work. Knowledge of the Swedish language can also be of importance since part of the work will be carried out in close co-operation with industry.

The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE) at Luleå University of Technology (LTU), Sweden, has a position available as PhD student (doktorand) in the area of Segmentation and Geometric Analysis of Machine Vision Data for Particle Size Measurement of Bulk Material.

Background
The thesis research is part of an ongoing framework of 3D machine vision research in automated online particle size measurement at Luleå University of Technology. The application area covers a broad range of applications in industry with a current focus in the mining and aggregates industries. The research goal is to develop prototype measurement products that can facilitate a transformation in process feedback and automatic control optimizations in blasting, crushing, agglomeration, and other processes that modify particle size. These optimizations will in turn facilitate a transformation in energy efficiency and product size quality in these industries.

The current research is based on 3D range data of bulk material (piled particulate material) either on conveyor belt or in the bucket of an excavator. The 3D range data is currently obtained from laser triangulation or laser scanners but is not restricted to these technologies. Evaluation of new technologies for fast 3D range sensing in outdoor and larger scale is expected.

The research framework has established automated segmentation and classification strategies for identifying, classifying, and sizing individual particles in a pile and the thesis research will predominately focus on algorithms and analysis around two key objectives;

Development of robust automated segmentation strategies that are easily adapted across a wide range of material types (pellets, rocks, limestone, iron ore, coal etc.)

Investigation of the processes that bias the visible of a particle pile and the relationship to the pile size distribution.

The research will likely require; advances in morphological image segmentation, algorithmic development in interpreting the geometry and topology of the 3D range data, mathematical modeling of piled particulate material, and possibly fusion of different measurement sources.

Research setup
The research is coordinated by Luleå University of Technology in conjunction with the ProcessIT Innovations industrial collaboration centre and will involve a number of industrial projects to demonstrate the research and solve industry problems. The candidate will join an emerging group in Industrial Image Analysis within the department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. Close collaboration with industrial and commercial partners will occur in order to ensure successful demonstration projects. The industry and commercial partners will contribute knowledge in the application area, machine vision techniques, and integration of the prototype solutions so that the candidate can focus predominantly on analysis and solving open research questions.

Candidate(s) profile
The candidate(s) should either have a background in mathematics, computer science and/or electrical engineering with good knowledge in several of the following areas; image processing, algorithms, computational geometry and numerical analysis. In addition, programming skills in Matlab and C/C++ are required during the course of the thesis work.

English language teachers in Macedonia and in the Balkans generally face many challenges in teaching English as a Foreign Language. New trends in teaching constantly challenge educators and it is only through dialogue with fellow practitioners that educators can themselves learn and develop their professional skills. The second International Conference on Hate Studies builds upon the successful 2004 initial conference. This conference will convene leading academics from multiple disciplines from around the world, law enforcement personnel, journalists, educators, representatives from governmental and non-governmental organizations, human rights experts, community organizers, activists, and others to discuss hatred from multiple perspectives. The lessons learned and plans which emerge will help educators, researchers, law enforcement, advocates, and others better analyze and combat hatred in its various manifestations.

Our theme this year is Interdisciplinary Approaches to Understanding the Nature of Hate, Crafting Models for Combating Hatred, and Implications for Practice. We are looking to explore this theme through the four main areas of education, research, practice, and advocacy. Papers from different theoretical or disciplinary lenses are invited such as those from history, communications, psychology, social psychology, evolutionary psychology, anthropology, sociology, criminal justice, law, biology, business, economics, theology, religious studies, political science, literature, philosophy, education, and more.

We are pleased to announce the 1st Tourism-Contact- Culture Research Network Conference: Tourism and Seductions of Difference, which will take place in Lisbon, Portugal from 10 to 12 September 2010. The Conference builds on previous events organised by the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change at Leeds Metropolitan University (www.tourism- culture.com) and will mark the establishment of the Tourism-Contact- Culture Research Network as an international group of university researchers interested in critical tourism research. It will also bring a long established tradition in tourism anthropology research at the Portuguese Network Centre for Anthropological Research, CRIA (www.cria.org. pt) to a wider international audience. The conference is to become an annual series hosted by members of the Tourism-Contact- Culture Research Network or by the annual conferences of professional academic associations.

As tourism research spreads into the social sciences, the aim of this series is to bring together social scientists studying tourism and related social phenomena from different disciplinary perspectives. We wish to discuss and 'test' the theoretical premises of foundational texts in tourism studies and to develop ongoing critique and new ideas. We welcome papers both from established academics re-assessing their work in the light of current theoretical developments in the social sciences and from an emergent generation of academics presenting their research outputs. Tourism and Seductions of Difference, the theme of the 2010 Conference in Lisbon, Portugal addresses key issues and theoretical perspectives which have left their mark on tourism research over recent years.

Revenge, so we are told, is a dish best served cold: a 'sweet' wreaking of vengeance on those who have – either in reality or in our minds – slighted, wronged or in some way 'injured' us and who are now 'enjoying' their just deserts by an avenging angel (or angels) on the great day of reckoning.

This inter- and multi-disciplinary research and publications project seeks to explore the multi-layered ideas and actions of vengeance or revenge. The project aims to explore the nature of revenge, its relationship with issues of justice, and its manifestation in the actions of individuals, groups, communities and nations. The
project will also consider the history of revenge, its 'legitimacy' , the 'scale' of vengeful actions and whether revenge has (or should have) 'limits'. Representations of revenge in film, literature, tv, theatre and radio will be analysed; cultural 'traditions' of retaliation and revenge will be considered. The role of mercy, forgiveness and pardon will be assessed.

Papers will be consider the following indicative themes:

This inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary conference project seeks to investigate and explore the nature, significance, and practices of forgiveness. Asking for or granting forgiveness can often be a routine part of everyday life, but
the nature of forgiveness as a personal, social and even international practice can be quite complex. It raises a wide variety of questions that touch on a vast array of academic disciplines. In cases of significant transgressions, social tensions, and even international conflicts the questions of what counts as forgiveness and how granting or withholding it can fundamentally change individual or international relationships becomes both more difficult and important to assess. This conference will look at the full range of this complexity. To encourage innovative trans-disciplinary dialogues, we warmly welcome papers from all disciplines, professions and vocations.

Papers, presentations, reports and workshops are invited on issues on or broadly related to any of the following themes:

1. Questions of Definition
~ What is forgiveness?
~ What sorts of behaviour require people to seek forgiveness?
~ Who can grant forgiveness? Can there be meaningful third party forgiveness?

The Eben Tisdale Fellowship, which includes a $5,000 grant, is a summer internship available to undergraduate and graduate students where the high-tech sector meets the government. The program offers outstanding opportunities for students to learn about high tech public policy issues with hands-on experience in Washington, D.C. Tisdale
Fellowships are open to students from colleges and universities all over the country.

The Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship, which includes one $5,000 grant for one student each year, is part of the Tisdale Fellowship program. Any student, undergraduate or graduate, who is interested in diversity and ethics issues, and in learning about high-tech public policy issues, can apply for this Fellowship.

The application for both of these Fellowships is the same, except that those applying for the Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship should include an additional essay on diversity and ethics.

The Fellowship has two main elements:

(1) Internship: Fellows participate an eight-week internship in the government relations office of a leading high technology company or association. In the recent past, fellows have interned at such companies as Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Philips Electronics and Monster Worldwide, as well as associations such as the Business Software Alliance or TechAmerica.

2) Issues Seminar: The issues seminar is a weekly lunch hosted by the different sponsoring companies and associations. Expert speakers lead discussions of current public policy issues in Washington, and the methods the high technology industry uses for effective advocacy.

The Summer 2010 Fellowship runs from June 14th – August 6th, 2010. The goal of the Fellowship is to create a supportive and collegial environment in which a new class of public policy professionals will be mentored to help ensure that the high-tech industry continues to have highly capable and well-trained individuals in both policy

The Institute of Structural Biology (IBS) in Grenoble and the Laboratory LEGI
collaborate within the project Nanobiodrop.

This project involves the formation of artificial biological membranes to study the insertion of transmembrane transport proteins and measure their activity. The technique based on the manipulation of nanodroplets has proven effective in vitro and its integration into micro systems is a challenge today that opens interesting perspectives in biotechnology and biology such as drug screening or the study
of artificial cells networks.

The objectives of the postdoctoral position are to associate in a microsystem :
{ The formation of biological membranes by microfuidic techniques.
{ The insertion of transmembrane proteins studied at the IBS (ion channels and transporters) .
{ The measurement of transport activity of these proteins by electrophysiologica l or optical means.
{ The possibility of creating a network of interconnected membranes by transmembrane proteins.

The ideal candidate is a biophysicist, with a knowledge of, or a desire to learn, standard microfabrication techniques. Expertise in fluidics, surface treatment, membrane protein biochemistry and/or electrophysiology will be an asset.

The proposed contract is for two years. It is funded by the French network RTRA "Nanosciences" and the collaborative program in Physics, Chemistry and Biology of the CNRS "Support for risk taking". The candidate will work under the supervision of both LEGI and IBS and will benefit from access to state-of-the-art resources in all aspects of the project.

The candidate should have defended his PhD thesis for less than three years and a part of his scientific training has been done outside of France.

The MHRD is a unique Master degree program in which students undertake a foundational semester of study at the University of Sydney, and then a second semester at one of the four partner universities:

Course Structure

Scholarships
Thirty scholarships, covering course fees and a living and travel allowance, will be offered to outstanding applicants from across the Asia Pacific region. This is made possible with the support of a significant grant from the European Commission.

Scholarships will be available to citizens of Asia Pacific countries (a full list of countries is available from the Academic Director upon request). The award of scholarships will be determined by academic qualifications and potential contribution to human rights and democratization.

The Erasmus Mundus Master Course in Data Mining and Knowledge Management (DMKM)
proposes specialist training in this field. This is a two years course. The higher education consortium that organizes the master is composed of six universities in four countries:

The Master's in DMKM is aimed at students from all over the world. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in computer science, applied mathematics or statistics, as well as a good level of English (TOEFL 550 or equivalent). Admission is granted on the basis of a selection procedure. Classes are taught in English and the course is composed of 18 modules of around sixty hours each.

The course runs over 4 semesters on at least two countries of the European Union. The first semester is devoted to basic training that includes theoretical mathematics, statistics, databases, logic, knowledge representation etc. whereas the two following semesters are dedicated to acquire 2 specialities among 6 in “E-Science”, “Data
Mining and Complex System Modeling, Application in Social Science”, “Knowledge and Decision”, “Statistical Modeling and Data Mining”, “Web Semantic” and “Relational Data Mining”. The fourth semester is devoted to the writing of a dissertation in either a laboratory or a company.

Language classes will also be provided to ensure that students integrate as well as possible in socio-cultural terms in the host country. Each student must spend (6-12) months in at least two of the 4 countries. Students that have obtained 120 ECTS, will automatically obtain national Master’s degrees from the countries in which they have
studied. Classes are transmitted via video-conferencing. They are also recorded and accessible on line. Students can benefit, on their site of residence, from support in the form of tutoring for each course.

Tuition fees are 4,000 € for European students and 8,000 € for other students.

The European Union provides up to 20 scholarships that covers transportations, subsistence and tuition fees. It offers also up to 6 scholarships to scholars.

Launched in 2009, the OCIS - Oxford Scholarships support British Muslim students as well as those from developing countries in Asia and Africa to read for degrees at the University of Oxford. Under the programme, up to five scholarships each year are available for undergraduate students from Muslim communities in Britain. Overview

The Fujitsu Scholarship provides full financial assistance for postgraduate education and cross-cultural management training in the East-West Knowledge Leaders Program (EWKLP) to participants from the Asia-Pacific region. Qualifications

In addition to qualifying for the Fujitsu Scholarship, you must also qualify for admission to JAIMS' EWKLP. For complete EWKLP information, refer to the EWKLP Application Packet contained at the bottom of the Application Checklist section. Fujitsu Scholarship qualifications include the following:

A bachelor's degree or a degree equivalent to a four-year standard baccalaureate degree in any discipline from a regionally or nationally accredited institution.

A minimum TOEFL score of 577/233/90 (paper/computer/Internet), TOEIC score of 750, or IELTS overall band test result of 6.5 or higher from tests taken between March 2008 and March 2010. Benefits

The Fujitsu Scholarship benefits include tuition and fees for the EWKLP program. Other benefits, which vary in amount each year, are also included.

Tuition and Fees for the EWKLP Stipend Toward Living Expenses *

*Applicants from the following countries/areas are not eligible to receive the monthly stipend: Australia, Hawaii, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.

Airfare:

Fujitsu Ltd. will provide a round-trip air ticket to cover transportation from the participant's home country to Honolulu, and back. The selection of the air carrier and travel agent, including itinerary, is at the discretion of Fujitsu Ltd. In the event the participant wishes to change and/or expand the route and/or the period of stay, Fujitsu Ltd. reserves the right to withhold the original ticket.

Health Insurance:

Fujitsu Ltd. will provide medical insurance that covers a portion of the participant's medical expenses during the program period. The participant pays all medical expenses not covered by the medical insurance. The selection of the medical insurance plan is at the discretion of Fujitsu Ltd.

Housing Arrangements:

Visa Arrangements:

Conditions

The Fujitsu Scholarship is offered with the expectation that the following conditions will be met by the recipients.

Scholarship Report

Upon EWKLP completion, all participants must submit a formal report that describes their learning experiences during the program.

Absence During the Fujitsu Scholarship Period

Should an emergency occur that requires travel to the participant's home country, such travel shall be the participant's personal expense. For the period of absence, the stipend will be prorated and subtracted from the applicable amount(s) set forth in the stipend toward living expenses.

All requests for absence should be submitted in writing to Fujitsu Ltd. (through JAIMS while in Hawaii) in advance, and should be addressed to the Fujitsu Scholarship Program in Japan.

Fujitsu Scholarship Termination

All selected scholars are required to participate in good faith, work diligently, and complete the EWKLP during the program period. Selected Fujitsu Scholars must understand and agree that any serious misconduct in this regard shall warrant immediate termination of the Fujitsu Scholarship without notice and at Fujitsu's sole discretion. The following are some examples of misconduct that could result in such termination:

Absence from or failure to complete the EWKLP without Fujitsu's or JAIMS' permission.
Noncompliance with the regulations, policies, and other instructions of Fujitsu and/or JAIMS.

Immoral, disorderly, indecent, or violent conduct.

Falsification of, or misstatement in any student or program application or other records and/or at any interview.

Failure to maintain good academic standing; unsatisfactory work performance.
If Fujitsu terminates the Fujitsu Scholarship for the participant pursuant to the above, the participant shall return to his/her home country immediately. The participant shall inform Fujitsu and/or JAIMS in advance of the date of his/her return and the address and phone number in his/her home country after return. The participant agrees that, effective as of the termination date, Fujitsu shall have no obligation to pay or provide anything under the Fujitsu Scholarship to the participant. Nonetheless, Fujitsu may at its sole discretion provide the participant with the appropriate air ticket for his/her return.

The participant agrees that if his/her conduct which has resulted in termination of the Fujitsu Scholarship pursuant to the above, in Fujitsu's sole judgment, was made fraudulently, with malice or conscious disregard or otherwise in bad faith, the participant shall, upon Fujitsu's request, immediately refund all the benefits and awards paid by Fujitsu and/or JAIMS hereunder to, or on behalf of him/her, to the date of the termination.

We are a microbiology and infectious diseases group in The Netherlands, investigating microbial flora in health and disease in relation to prevention of bacterial infections.

We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow bioinformatics/ -statistics who will help us to analyze complex metagenomic data in relation to epidemiological parameters. Besides the complex problem of interpreting phylogenetic data of microbiota, we find there are currently no generally accepted statistical methods available to analyze complex communities in relation to epidemiological determinants, especially not in multivariate ways.

Our final goal is to model complex microbiota with the help of environmental and individual characteristics, with the ultimate goal to predict when disease will develop and to design preventive strategies.

We are looking for someone with experience in the field of metagenomics, bio-informatics, or adjacent fields, who does not dislike statistics and epidemiology, is not afraid of developing new tools, is creative, efficient, independent, and likes to work in a multi-disciplinary team.

CfA: Media and audiovisual techniques literacy project in Bulgaria

We from a youth NGO in Bulgaria are looking for partner NGOs or public bodies (e.g. a public TV, a municipality) to take part in a project on media and audiovisual literacy for young people. If you are interested or know an organisation that might be - do give a shout. The deadline for partnership agreements to be signed and sent to us is 29 September.

It will be a small-budget project (25 000 reqested from the EC) with 3 face-to-face workshops in Bulgaria on state-of-art audiovisual software, monthly catch-ups via skype and most of the creative work will be exchanged and worked on as in an internet community. The project’s primary objective is to provide informal education sessions on contemporary techniques of audiovisual content production to an international team of multidisciplinary young artists in order to improve their ability to analyse and produce meaningful media content, including images and sounds, so that they can communicate their work competently in available new media channels in order to express themselves at personal, civil and professional level. The project targets European young audiovisual artists’ literacy with regard to contemporary media relevant to their work, namely television and film, radio and recorded music, new media and the Internet. It proposes the use of innovative methodology by introducing state-of-art audiovisual technologies to promote youth creative work, establishing virtual networks and promoting artistic work via new media tools. The content of the project is creative as it targets young artists and the content
and outcome of the activities will consist of the artistic work of the participants.

The project aims at demonstrating the two-fold influence (of new opportunities and global commercialisation of content) that new media and virtual communication have on contemporary audiovisual art. It will foster the critical thinking of the participants and will provide technical skills for the informed usage of multimedia software and information and communication technology (ICT) as tools for creative virtual networks and innovative artistic and civil content. The project proposes to provide trainings on the usage of state-of-art audiovisual software and ICTs to young artists with multidisciplinary backgrounds. The seminars, carried out via both face-to-face and online working sessions, will empower the participants to be aware of both the opportunities and limitations of global information channels that are the basis of personal and occupational development of creative artists in the present day of virtual social and professional networks. It will
enable them to critically evaluate and consciously use the media of television and film, radio and recorded music, new media and the Internet to produce and distribute their artistic work.

The project activities will take place in the 18 months of the period January 2010 – June 2011. They will include 3 face-to-face workshops in Bulgaria, rural municipality of Dupnitsa (in 2nd, 9th, and 17th months) and 15 online workshops (monthly review of the creative results and exchange of country team progress, in between the face-to-face workshops). Each workshop will include both training sessions on state-of-art audiovisual software and ICT usage for creative purposes, and creative sessions of joint artistic work. Each of the 4 partner organisation will be represented by 4 multidisciplinary participants (young artists from rural regions with fewer opportunities of access to specialised formal education and innovative technologies) and 1 coordinating youth worker at each of the workshops. Each partner organisation will also be responsible for coordinating the country work group of 4 multidisciplinary artists and will provide this administration
work and relevant ICT facilities as in kind co-funding.

The outcome of the young artists’ joint creative process should be the production of a film. It will be created by all of the participants who will be selected according to the multidisciplinary frame of the project, which envisages the team to include composers, sound engineers, computer animation artists, script writers, camera operators, video mix engineers, etc. The entire process of the production of the movie will be designed and undergone by the joint creative effort of the multidisciplinary artist team. The artistic work will be fulfilled on a voluntary basis with all necessary equipment and travel expenses provided by the project and will result in official credits for authorship on the movie.

The produced film will include author music and will treat the topic of stereotypes about the EU countries and the reality of youth’s everyday life in each of the participating countries. The film’s aim is to foster mutual understanding between young people in different countries. It will be presented and marketed via popular new media and social networks to the purpose of initiating an awareness raising campaign about the role of artistic networking in overcoming and redefining national citizenship stereotypes on the background of the process of European integration.

The long-term results for the personal, occupational and social lives of the participants will include:

► Knowledge and skills in using innovative media tools and channels, including audiovisual software, new media and work in virtual communities;
► Creative application of media software and channels, being acquainted and able to use state-of-art multimedia technologies to produce art content;
► Active use of Internet and ICTs that empowers the participants to create media content and to critically exploit the potential of contemporary media for both professional development and as a way to active citizenship by access to various messages and the ability to critically and consciously participate in their production;
► Knowledge and skills in using and participation in virtual networks to promote their artistic and civil stance;
► Awareness of media as a tool for promoting various content of both insecure quality, purpose and accuracy, and a capacity for critical appraisal and contribution to using contemporary media channels for producing innovative artistic products and independent civil messages;
► Familiarity with the increasing opportunities in using the Internet as a distribution channel that will allow the participants to create and disseminate images, information and content;
► Conscience of the European dimension of contemporary citizenship in each of the participating countries and solidarity and tolerance among young people in the European Union;
► Ability of team work in a multicultural environment;
► Improved organisational capacity of the partner organisations due to the introduction of innovative technical tools and up-to-date media methods in their youth activities.

The Hal Rothman Research Fellowship was created to recognize graduate student achievements in environmental history research in honor of Hal Rothman, recipient of ASEH's Distinguished Service award in 2006 and editor of Environmental History for many years. The fellowship provides a single payment of $1,000 for PhD graduate student research and travel in the field of environmental history, without geographical restriction. The funds must be used to support archival research and travel during 2010.

Training in Bucharest on EuropeAid procedures

Last January Asociatia Serviciul Apel started a project financed by EuropeAid under the programme "Non-State Actors and Local Authorities (NSA/LA) in Development. Coordination, Cooperation and Networking Activities in Europe" . The title of the project is "Helpdesk platform and support to New Member State Non State Actors/Local Authorities in the Development sector" (Contract DCI-NSA/2008/ 155-602).

The objective of our project, which is implemented by punto.sud Italy with 4 partners and 2 associates, is to improve the management capacity and accountability of New Member States (NMS) NSA/LA in working with EuropeAid. Main project components are the development of a website on EuropeAid-funded projects (please view the work-in-progress on-line at www.puntosud. org/helpdesk- europeaid) ; a manual on EuropeAid procedures and project management that will be downloadable from the web; a
helpdesk (day-to-day support) to organisations implementing or wanting to implement EuropeAid-funded projects; and 9 training sessions on EuropeAid's funding modalities and project management. Please see the project's leaflet attached to this e-mail for more details. You can diffuse it freely and we would be grateful if you'd do that.

The first training session will be organized in Bucharest on October 21-22, 2009. Please see the invitation to training in attachment. The ASN Convention, the most attended international and inter-disciplinary scholarly gathering of its kind, welcomes proposals on a wide range of topics related to nationalism, ethnicity, ethnic conflict and national identity in Central Europe, the Balkans, the former Soviet Union, the Caucasus, the Turkic world, and Central Eurasia. The Convention also invites proposals devoted to comparative perspectives on nationalism- related issues in other regions of the world, as well as theoretical approaches that need not be grounded in any particular geographic region. Disciplines represented include political science, history, anthropology, sociology, international studies, security studies, area studies, economics, geography and
geopolitics, sociolinguistics, literature, psychology, and related fields

The Convention is inviting paper, panel, roundtable, or special presentation proposals for three special thematic sidebars:
."History, Politics and Memory," on the construction and contestation of the memory of historical events in sites, political discourse and historical research;
."Interpretive and Cognitive Approaches in Ethnography, " on the richness and breadth of findings in the increasingly popular contextual approachto the study of nationalism and ethnicity;
."The Resurgence of Russia: Domestic and Foreign Policy Implications, " on the transformation in the discourse, policies and practices of the Russia internally and externally.

To celebrate the re-launch of /Nationalities Papers/, the opening reception of the convention will be hosted by /Nationalities Papers/ at which occasion the re-launched journal will be introduced by the editorial team. During the convention, /Nationalities Papers/ will host the first /Nationalities Debate/, a high profile discussion on the state of the art, which will be subsequently featured in the journal.

Since 2005, the ASN Convention has acknowledged excellence in graduate studies research by offering Awards for Best Doctoral Student Papers in five sections: Russia/Ukraine/ Caucasus, Central Asia/Eurasia, Central Europe, Balkans, and Nationalism Studies. The winners at the 2009 Convention were Sofia Sebastian (LSE, UK) for the Balkans, Jennie Schulze (George Washington U, US) for Central Europe, Erik Scott (UC Berkeley, US) for Russia/Ukraine/ Caucasus, Fredrik Sjoberg (Harvard U, US/Uppsala U, Sweden) and Barbara Junisbai (Indiana U, US) for Central Eurasia, and Laia Balcells (Yale U, US) for Nationalism Studies. Doctoral student applicants whose proposals are accepted for the 2010 Convention, who will not have defended their dissertation by 1 November 2009, and whose papers are delivered by the deadline, will automatically be considered for the awards.

The 2010 Convention is, moreover, inviting submissions for documentaries made within the past few years and available in DVD format (either NTSC or PAL). Most films selected for the convention will be screened during regular panel slots and will be followed by a discussion moderated by an academic expert. Films on the 2009 Program included /The Singing Revolution/ (US, 2008), /Holodomor/ (Hungary, 2008), /Shadow of the Holy Book/ (Finland, 2008), /The Lost Colony/ (Netherlands, 2008) and /Citizens K: The "K" Twins /(France, 2007).

The 2010 Convention invites proposals for INDIVIDUAL PAPERS or PANELS. A panel includes a chair, three or four presentations based on written papers, and a discussant. Proposals using an /innovative/ format are encouraged. A popular new format is a roundtable on a /new book/, in which the author is being engaged by three discussants --- /ten /book panels were featured in the 2009 Convention. Other innovative formats in proposals are encouraged.

The 2010 Convention is also welcoming offers to serve as DISCUSSANT on a panel to be created by the Program Committee from individual paper proposals. The application to be considered as discussant can be self-standing, or accompanied by an individual paper proposal.

New Book: Modern Greece: A History since 1821

Modern Greece: A History since 1821 provides an in-depth narrative history of modern Greece by two leading authorities. The authors bring together their knowledge of primary Greek sources and their first hand experience of Greek culture to explore the political, economic, social, and cultural history of this fascinating country from ’within’. In addition, they set the country’s development within the wider geo-political framework of Europe, the Balkans, and the Middle East, allowing the reader an understanding of Greek history within the context of its surrounding geographical area.

The book traces the history of Greece from the creation of the Greek state in 1821 and early conflicts over former Ottoman lands, through to Greece’s instability between the wars, and as a battleground between the Allied forces and Axis powers in WWII. The authors pay particular attention to contemporary events, including the return to democracy in 1974 and the profound economic and social changes which have arisen as a result of EU membership.

John S. Koliopoulos is Professor of Modern Greek History at the University of Thessaloniki. He has written widely on nineteenth and twentieth-century Greece, including Brigands with a Cause: Brigandage and Irredentism in Modern Greece, 1881-1912 (1987) and Plundered Loyalties (1999).

Thanos M. Veremis is Professor of Political History at the University of Athens, and is President of the Greek National Council for Education. His previous publications include Greece's Balkan Entanglement (1994), The Military in Greek Politics (1997), and Action without Foresight: Western Intervention in Yugoslavia (2002).

The authors have collaborated on Greece: A Modern Sequel (2002), a thematic overview of scholarly debates concerning the history of modern Greece.

*Croatian Immigrants in Australia: Class versus Ethnicity as Factors in Identity*

Val Colic-Peisker's ethnography of Croatian immigrants in the Australian city of Perth sets itself the brave task of dampening migration scholars' fascination with ethnicity and calling attention to class as the determinant of migrants' transnational experiences. This is the third monograph on Croatians in Australia to be published in twelve years, but the first to take this line. Colic-Peisker' s study was preceded by Dona Kolar-Panov' s /Video, War and the Diasporic Imagination /(1997)/ /and Zlatko Skrbis('s /Long Distance Nationalism: Diasporas, Homelands, and Identities /(1999), both of which focused on the diasporic transnationalism through which migrants stayed in touch with and provided material support for the homeland during the post-Yugoslav conflict, that is to say, (from their perspective) Croatia's war of independence.

Although the book's title implies a full-scale comparison of the Australian and American (or rather U.S.) experiences of Croatian migrants' acculturation, Australia far outweighs the United States when it comes to the content of the book. Observations about the relative status of migrants, in particular "white ethnics," a term used by the author, in Australia and the United States recur every so often, and
there is a brief comparison of Croatian cultural and political organization in the two states (pp. 82-83). For the most part, however, the book represents an anthropological and sociological study of an Australian community, and is all the stronger for it. Colic-Peisker engages with Australian sociological debates about multiculturalism and assimilation, hints at how changes in Australian immigration policy structured the profile of Croatian migration to this particular hostland, and grounds her findings in her interviews with forty working-class and middle-class Croatians negotiating the workplaces and sprawling suburbs of Perth.

Colic-Peisker situates herself within academic debates on migration by attempting to bridge what she refers to as the "old" migration studies (the sociological study of how migrants interact with their host country) and the "new" migration studies' paradigm of transnationalism- -the contacts migrants retain with their homelands amid
flows of cultural products, material goods, information, capital, and people (p. 6). The typical "ethnic transnationalism" of activities across state borders that "nurtures territorial, ethnic, and national attachments, " she argues, aptly describes the diasporic migrants of Kolar-Panov and Skrbis( (working-class migrants from poor backgrounds in rural Dalmatia who arrived in Australia during the 1950s and 1960s), yet does not account for the identities of a second group of Croatian
migrants that Colic-Peisker encountered. These were young professionals who moved from Croatia to Australia in the 1980s and 1990s, who situated themselves instead within a cosmopolitan framework based "on a deterritorial, acquired (and therefore changeable and transferable) professional identification" (p. 212). The core of the working-class cohort's identity, Colic-Peisker finds, was ethnicity and their town,
village, or island of origin, whereas education and profession was the core of identity for the younger middle-class cohort. The former "see their social position determined purely by ethnicity, by being 'strangers' in Australia," while the latter "recognize their class as well as ethnic position and navigate their life chances on the labor market accordingly, " for example, making use abroad of their privilege
as white Australians (p. 18). The two cohorts of migrants had little in common and rarely encountered each other socially. The working-class group constructed "the emotional cement of the ethnic community" through nostalgic practices, such as folk music and dance, card games, religious belief, and attendance at the local Croatian club (p. 98). None of these activities appealed to the young professionals, who rejected the stereotypes of "low occupation status, broken English, and ethnonationalism, " which had become attached to Croatians in Australia (p. 167). They constructed their identity instead around access to a global professional milieu to which their qualifications- -and their hard-won proficiency in the English language--entitled them. Migrating to Australia facilitated and corroborated their membership of this elite. While "a collectivistic ethnic-ascribed identity is a central axis for the working-class cohort" of Croatians, "the identity axis of the middle-class cohort is professionally achieved, individualistic, and secular.... The professional core of identity of the younger cohort became (even more) globally validated and Westernized through life and work in Australia" (p. 169).

The contrast between these two migrant cohorts underpins the book. Colic-Peisker begins by introducing readers to the migrants' homeland, Croatia, and offering an overview of Croatian sociological theories on "how rural culture was co-opted into the socialist worldview" (p. 41). Here, she seeks to understand the "intersection of traditional, modern and 'socialist' values," as well as the generational value shift of late socialism, which she expects to have shaped her informants' values (p. 37). She draws on Ronald Inglehart's theory of the "culture shift" in advanced industrial society (/Culture Shift in Advanced Industrial Society/ [1990]) as an explanation for the differences between her two cohorts. She shows that a generation brought up in material security, like the young professionals who were born during Yugoslavia's
economically successful 1950s and 1960s, is likely to develop "postmaterialist" rather than "materialist" values; therefore, this group "seeks goals beyond the purely material, such as freedom, self-expression, quality of life, and self-actualization" (p. 53). Two further chapters follow this orientation in the sociology of the sending country: one short piece on the global context of migration (more than
half of which is actually taken up by a history of Croatian emigration) and a longer overview of multiculturalism and egalitarianism in Australia. The kernel of the book is contained in chapters 4 and 5, which discuss the different experiences of the two cohorts, illustrated by a number of biographical narratives. What would in many other cases be the headline story of a study of Croatian migration--the concept of the Croatian diaspora and nationalist sociability and activism--does not appear here until chapters 6 and 7. By this point in the book, the author has contextualized well her analysis of the migrants' social practices, their investment in their homes and gardens (not that "investment" is the right word to describe the attitudes of a group
that, in contrast to the host society, cherished the use value rather than exchange value of their homes), and their working lives. A quantitative values survey among Croatian migrants takes up the last chapter, before a conclusion that attempts to refine the concepts of transnationalism and diaspora in light of the author's research findings.

Colic-Peisker first encountered a number of her informants, and indeed first reflected on the differences between the two groups of migrants, when she started working as a public service interpreter soon after her own arrival in Australia--an experience which suggests that, to paraphrase the Shakespearean adage, some are born to ethnography, some achieve ethnography, and some have ethnography thrust upon them.
Colic-Peisker counted herself among the cohort of young professionals from Croatia (those whose ability in English unlocked the possibility of acculturation) when she began to visit the schools, hospitals, courts, and police stations of Perth--"What a bonanza for a sociologist! " indeed--and to meet older, working-class Croatians who had built up and remained in their own ethnic networks (p. 3). "Their stories also
revealed to me that their migration experience was very different from the experience of recently arrived Croatians, including my own," Colic-Peisker explains (p. 3). "I felt a little guilty, as if I was hiding my true identity from my interlocutors, a curious social scientist as well as a recent migrant 'disguised' as an interpreter.
With the force of fate, this job that I had never planned to do led me toward a formal research project exploring identities in transnational context" (p. 3). The bulk of Colic-Peisker' s reflection on her insider position is contained in a separate essay that she published in an edited collection, but her status as a co-national is inseparable from her ethnographic reflections here.[1] In particular, her understanding of the norm of hospitality in working-class Croatian homes seemed to
overcome her informants' frequent suspicion of social research: "A visitor who refuses the offered food and drink defines herself as an outsider and, therefore, implicitly, cannot be trusted.... The ritual of hospitality also empowers the hosts, as the visitor accepts socializing on their terms" (p. 27). Accepting gifts from her informants' gardens (the site where people with repetitive manual jobs could keep up "a sense of being a complete person" and "show off one's skills" by growing fruit and vegetables, sometimes even keeping poultry) likewise contributed to the rapport and avoided the embarrassment of refusal (p. 103). Once, when Colic-Peisker asked for a white tea at a women's fundraising event, the coffee-drinking women from the neighborhood' s working-class Croatian community "recognized this was an 'English way' ... and, implicitly, my choice was seen as un-Croatian" (p. 200).

As befits an ex-interpreter, Colic-Peisker makes language an important part of her ethnography. What distinguishes the two migrant cohorts, besides class and values, is their competence in English: the older working-class group came to Australia when English instruction for migrants were few and far between, acquired a limited vocabulary through work, and used Croatian at home and among friends. The younger
professionals could not have entered the country under the Australian immigration regulations of the time without some proficiency in English and had to refine their skills further on arrival in order to succeed in the professional fields to which they aspired. Their high aspirations sometimes led to frustration that they had not lost their foreign accent even though the accent seemed not to have caused them any practical difficulties. The older working-class migrants' relative lack of English, in contrast, put them at a disadvantage in several regards: they could not negotiate with bosses (except ethnic entrepreneurs) or take part in a union, they missed out on the promotions that skilled laborers could ordinarily look forward to as they got older, they were at higher risk of industrial injury if they did not understand safety instructions (this problem was compounded by a norm of masculine gender
identity in which strenuous physical labor in order to feed one's family garnered respect), and they had to rely on ethnic media sources rather than the Australian mainstream media for information about the wider world. The Croatian ethnic community, like the communities of Italians or Greeks, provided enough services to fulfill the needs its members could not fulfill in general Australian society. In contrast, younger professionals could not join their desired stratum of "skilled
itinerants who search for opportunities across the globe" unless they did speak English (p. 87). English-language skills, Colic-Peisker argues, have thus become "the basis for class distinction in non-English- speaking countries" and, indeed, a basis for societies' perceptions of immigrants as higher or lower status (p. 87). The
commonsense idea of language as an ethnic marker is also complicated by the Croatian-Australian case. Colic-Peisker observes that "it is hard to say without hesitation that the two cohorts speak the same language," since the older working-class migrants spoke the distinctive dialect(s) of Dalmatia and its islands (p. 166). The urban professionals spoke standard Croatian instead, and "language differences sometimes reach the point of mutual incomprehension, " with Colic-Peisker the interpreter more than once having to switch into the Dalmatian dialect in order to be understood (p. 166).

Colic-Peisker' s observations about English point to one somewhat under-theorized aspect of the book: the role and power of the state in structuring the immigrant experience. As a new interpreter, she had expected to meet members of the same migrant cohort as herself on her assignments; yet she met only the older cohort, and realized eventually that this was a result of the Australian immigration reforms of the 1980s, which imposed a points test on prospective migrants that required both labor skills and English proficiency. Through these restrictions, the state narrowed down the pool of potential migrants and structured the future migrant cohorts in advance. However, the immigration procedure, and indeed migrants' interactions with the state's agents and institutions in general, are rarely mentioned, as significant a part of the migrants' experiences as they may well be (moreover, as a public service interpreter the author would have witnessed many such interactions herself). Chapter 3, on the hostland, would have been one obvious place to discuss the impact of state power, yet most of the chapter is, in fact, concerned with social attitudes (multiculturalism and "ethnic food," the Australian myth of egalitarianism, "white
ethnics," English and social mobility, and the social geography of Perth). These are an important feature of the host society but, by themselves, are insufficient to explain the state's immigration regime. The four-page history of Australian immigration policy that opens the chapter could have been greatly expanded: in particular, a historical account of the creation and development of Australia's stringent, much-imitated points-based system for immigration would have provided
readers with a greater understanding of the political background to the ethnography. One is also left to wonder about immigrants of the same age as the young professionals who came to Australia in different circumstances, such as refugees from Bosnia-Herzegovina. Perhaps so few Bosnian Croats qualified to enter Australia that their impact on the Croatian community was trivial; if so, we are not told even that,
although we do know that "some ethnic Croats from Bosnia, who came as refugees in the 1990s" started going to the Croatian clubs in Perth but could not connect with the Dalmatian dialects and pastimes that dominated there (p. 172). The picture of contemporary migration is more complicated than a dichotomy between low-skilled economic migration to the rich West after World War II and highly skilled transnational migrant flows in the 1980s and 1990s, as Colic-Peisker acknowledges when she mentions U.S. "illegals" and "the difficult migration of (post)modern- day helots" late in the book (p. 217). Including low-skilled young migrants, or simply explaining that there were none to include, would have expanded the study by giving both a synchronic and a diachronic perspective on Colic-Peisker' s key factor of class.

Although this study is rooted in Australian realities (so much so that it is hard to understand what "America" is doing in the title at all), it is still of some interest to anthropologists of Europe. One of the major debates in the anthropology of former Yugoslavia is the so-called rural-urban divide: the issue had been raised well before the fall of Yugoslavia, and was translated during the post-Yugoslav wars into an
account of the war that associated the countryside with backwardness, war, and nationalism, and the city with progress, cosmopolitanism, and peace. One could argue that the consequences and constructions of Croatia's rural-urban divide (or rather, former Yugoslavia's rural-urban divide, since the phenomenon went well beyond Croatia) are played out in migrants' social practices half the world away. Colic-Peisker introduces the origins of this discourse by discussing the émigré Croatian
sociologist Dinko Tomas(ic''s idea of "Dinaric culture," the source of many an urban stereotype of the backward peasant.[2] Yet she does not take the opportunity to pursue the afterlife of his theory into the present day: a rich vein of Croatian ethnology that shows how rural social practices were transformed by (and commented on) the modernization policies of socialism, and a contemporary interest by both insiders and outsiders in the relative significance of ethnicity in the post-Yugoslav successor states, both go unmined. Colic-Peisker' s observation that the cosmopolitanism of her young professionals "is an attribute of those who do not feel that ethnic and national belonging determine their identity" recalls the work of Stef Jansen on young city-dwellers in mid-1990s Croatia and Serbia (/Antinacionalizam:
etnografija otpora u Beogradu i Zagrebu/ [2005]), who rejected the dominant nationalist discourse that ethnicity should be the primary determinant of everyone's identity (p. 11). Jansen conducted his fieldwork in Zagreb and Belgrade between 1996 and 1998; his informants might well have belonged to the same age cohort and shared the same social background as Colic-Peisker' s. There is similarly more to be said
on the different concepts of kinship and care among the cohorts. "Global care chains" and the tensions they entail are an emerging topic of interest in migration studies, but the topic rarely comes up in this account, besides the problem that Australian-born children of Croatian migrants sometimes do not share the Croatian ethic of personally caring for an elderly parent.[3]

The major value of the study, however, is as a reminder that there is more to migration studies, and to post-Yugoslav studies, than the fashionable (and sometimes necessary) topic of ethnicity. While considering the differences among migratory cohorts produced by class (and by state immigration policy), we are invited to reflect on what would happen if class, rather than ethnicity, were to (again?) become
the focus of our scholarly enquiry.

Project description

The chair CAES of the University of Twente offers a job opening in the large European CATRENE project “TOETS”, on test solutions for Systems-on-Chip (SoC) and Systems-in-Package (SiP).

In very deep submicron CMOS technology, the influence of dynamic faults is rapidly increasing. The effect of resulting faults will be investigated for a chosen digital target system which can include synchronous and asynchronous IP circuits. The main applications are envisioned in the automotive arena. Cooperation with Dutch industry is anticipated.

The planned activities are as follows:

determine which dynamic faults can be expected in advanced DSM CMOS technology.

how do dynamic faults translate in errors in the circuits of the target system using previous process data & simulation.

investigate DfX insertion solutions and alternative observation options.

investigate means for increasing the resilience of the target system under dynamic faults thereby increasing the quality required for automotive applications

implement and evaluate the previous approach of the target system in a simulation environment

Relation to other projects

The project will run in conjunction with three other related projects in CATRENE, FES and FP7 frameworks on dependability.

What we ask

· Candidates should have a M.Sc. degree in preferably Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, with background in one or more of the following areas: digital circuit and SoC design and test, coding algorithms, embedded processors

· Candidates should be fluent in English. An interview will be part of the

· Candidates should have good hardware skills, but not avoid software solutions.

What we offer

We offer a full-time PhD position in a dynamic and international environment. The duration of the contract is four years. The gross salary will range from € 2.042,00 in the first year to € 2.612,00 per month in the fourth year.

CREAM (Mechanistic Effect Models for Ecological Risk Assessment of Chemicals) is an EC–funded network with partners from nine European countries. The aim of CREAM is to improve ecological risk assessments of chemicals, which is highly relevant for food production and environmental safety, by using mechanistic models that explore the effects of chemicals on individuals and populations.

You will be involved in developing ecological models and accompanying experiments that will be used for model validation. Organisms ranging from aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates to mammals will be the focus of the projects, and approaches will encompass ecotoxicology, population ecology, and species interactions at various spatial scales. All projects have exciting dimensions both in basic research and application. Regular network training events will help you to develop your skills in modelling, statistical and programming methods, ecotoxicology and risk assessment, and complementary skills. Saint Louis University is now accepting applications for the Presidential Scholarship from students that will be entering in fall 2010. To apply please read the information below, then click on the application link at the bottom of the page.

The Presidential Scholarship is a four-year, full-tuition award, the recipients of which represent some of the most exemplary student leaders on Saint Louis University’s campus. Each Presidential Scholar is also provided with University funding of up to $1,200 in support of an Investigative Learning Experience (ILEX), which may take the form of a research venture, service project, internship or other extracurricular endeavor of choice.

Presidential Scholarship Eligibility

Students who meet the following minimum requirements are invited to fill out a separate application for Presidential Scholarship candidacy:

Cumulative GPA of 3.85 or higher, weighted or unweighted, as reported on the students high school transcript at the close of junior year
Official test score of at least 30 on the ACT or 1320 (math and critical reading) on the SAT
Only those students who meet these requirements will be considered eligible for candidacy. These criteria are used only for determining eligibility and do not guarantee that the student will be selected either for further competition or as a Presidential Scholarship recipient.

Based on their scholarship applications, a select group of students will be invited to Saint Louis University’s campus in January or February 2010 to interview and compete for the Presidential Scholarship.

Qualifying Test Scores
Test scores from either the ACT or the SAT may serve as qualifiers for Presidential Scholarship candidacy. However, scores from December 2009 test dates are the last that can be used to determine eligibility.

Students who anticipate achieving a qualifying test score during a December test datemust still submit a completed Presidential Scholarship Application by December 1, 2009. Presidential Scholarship applicants who adhere to this deadline and achieve a qualifying test score in the month of December will still be given consideration for Presidential Scholarship candidacy.

Application Requirements
To apply for Presidential Scholarship candidacy, students meeting the initial eligibility requirements must:

Submit a completed Saint Louis University Application for Freshman Admission, including application essay, official transcript, test scores and Secondary School Report Form, postmarked no later than December 1, 2009

The Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program is a scholarly community where individuals pursue advanced work across a wide range of academic disciplines, professions, and creative arts. Radcliffe Institute fellowships are designed to support scholars, scientists, artists, and writers of exceptional promise and demonstrated accomplishment who wish to pursue work in academic and professional fields and in the creative arts. In recognition of Radcliffe’s historic contributions to the education of women and to the study of issues related to women, the Radcliffe Institute sustains a continuing commitment to the study of women, gender, and society. Applicants’ projects need not focus on gender, however. Women and men from across the United States and throughout the world, including developing countries, are encouraged to apply. We seek to build a community of fellows that is diverse in every way. Former fellows of the Radcliffe Institute (1999 to present) are not eligible to apply.

Selection Process
Each application is reviewed in a dual-tiered process by peers in relevant disciplines. Applications are judged on the quality and significance of the proposed project and the applicant’s record of achievement and promise. Applicants are notified of the results of the selection process in March. Cluster proposals from two to five individuals, all of whom fit the criteria status for individual applicants, will be accepted for review.

Terms and Conditions
Stipends are funded up to $65,000 for one year with additional funds for project expenses. Some support for relocation expenses is provided where relevant. We work with fellows with families who have particular issues connected to relocating to smooth the transition. If so directed, Radcliffe will pay the stipend to the fellow’s home institution. Fellows receive office or studio space and access to libraries and other resources of Harvard University during the fellowship year, which extends from early September 2010 through June 30, 2011. Visual artists and film, video, sound and new media artists who do not have full time academic appointments may apply to come for one semester only. The stipend is $32,500.00. Fellows are expected to be free of their regular commitments so they may devote themselves full time to the work outlined in their proposal. Since this is a residential fellowship, we expect fellows to reside in the Boston area during that period and to have their primary office at the Institute so that they can participate fully in the life of the community.

The Marshall Sherfield Fellowships

The Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission will be offering up to two post-doctoral Marshall Sherfield Fellowships in 2009. The first such Fellowships were awarded in 1998 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Marshall Plan.

The Fellowships, which are funded by the Marshall Sherfield Fellowship Foundation, and administered by the Marshall Commission, enable American scientists or engineers to undertake post-doctoral research for a period of one to two academic years at a British university or research institute.

The Fellowships are named after Sir Roger Makins FRS, later Lord Sherfield (1904-1996), British Ambassador to the United States from 1953 to 1956 and the architect of the Marshall Scholarships programme. He went on to be the Chairman of the Marshall Commission, and of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, and from 1970-1992 was Chancellor of the University of Reading.

The aim of the Marshall Sherfield Fellowships is to introduce American scientists and engineers to the cutting edge of UK science and engineering. It is intended that this in turn will build longer-term contacts and international links between the United Kingdom and the United States in key scientific areas. The wider objectives are similar to those of the Marshall Scholarships programme:
To enable intellectually distinguished young Americans, their country’s future leaders, to study in the UK.
To help fellows gain an understanding and appreciation of contemporary Britain.
To contribute to the advancement of knowledge in science and technology at Britain’s centres of academic excellence.
To motivate fellows to act as ambassadors from the USA to the UK and vice versa throughout their lives thus strengthening British American understanding.
To promote the personal and academic fulfilment of each fellow.

To qualify candidates should:
Be citizens of the United States of America normally resident in the USA
Hold a doctorate in a science or engineering subject by the time they take up their Fellowship
In appointing Fellows the selectors will look for distinction of intellect and character as evidenced both by their scholastic attainments and by their other activities and achievements. Candidates, who will be expected to pursue high level research during their Fellowship, should demonstrate an outward-looking disposition, good communications skills and the potential to promote British-American understanding. Preference will be given to candidates who combine high academic ability with the capacity to play an active part in the life of the United Kingdom university or research institute to which they go, and to those who display a potential to make a significant contribution to their own society. Selectors will also look for strong motivation and seriousness of purpose, including the presentation of a specific and realistic research programme.

Insight Turkey invites manuscripts for its Winter 2010 issue that will explore European policies and debates on “Turkish Communities and Muslim Citizens of Europe” with theoretical reflections and analyses of their social, cultural, political and religious positions. We seek original manuscripts from scholars across the social sciences and humanities, both discipline specific and interdisciplinary, as well as contributions from policy circles. In this special issue, which will be edited by the guest editor Professor Talip Kucukcan of SETA Foundation & Marmara University, our

The Accademia di architettura dell’Università della Svizzera italiana, Mendrisio, invites applications for a funded PhD position from October 15th 2009, for a minimum period of 36 months. The position requires full time attendance. Remuneration is based on the Swiss National Fund parameters.

The PhD student will take part in the CUS research project (Swiss Cooperation Project in Architecture) Critical encyclopaedia of re-use and restoration of Twentieth-Century architecture, coordinated by professors Bruno Reichlin (USI), Franz Graf (EPFL) and Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani (ETHZ). He/She will work under the supervision of the responsible faculty members (B. Reichlin, R. Grignolo). The area of his/her research will be the theory and history of re-use and restoration of Twentieth-Century heritage and work will comprise the documentation of case studies. She/He will also write some of the encyclopaedia’ s entries.

USA: Research Fellowship in Environmental History

ASEH created this fellowship to recognize the contributions of Samuel P. Hays, the inaugural recipient of the society's Distinguished Scholar Award, and to advance the field of environmental history, broadly conceived. The fellowship provides a single payment of $1,000 to help fund travel to and use of an archive or manuscript repository.

It is open to practicing historians (either academic, public, or independent). Graduate students are ineligible. A Ph.D. is not required.

The deadline for submissions is *September 30th, 2009*, and the recipient will be selected and notified in December 2009 for funding available in January 2010.

Applications should include a C.V. no more than three pages in length and a two-page statement (500 words maximum) explaining the project and how the research funds will be used. Scholars who are no more than three years beyond receipt of the doctorate are invited to apply for the Hench Post-Dissertation Fellowship, a year-long residential fellowship at the American Antiquarian Society. The purpose of the post-dissertation fellowship is to provide the recipient with time and resources to extend research
and/or to revise the dissertation for publication. Any topic relevant to the Society's library collections and programmatic scope, and coming from any field or disciplinary background, is eligible. AAS collections focus on all aspects of American history, literature, and culture from contact to 1876, and provide rich source material for projects across the spectrum of early American studies. Our holdings include many collections that would be of use to environmental historians, including maps; landscape drawings, paintings, and photographs; local histories; and agricultural manuals and periodicals.

The Society welcomes applications from those who have advance book contracts, as well as those who have not yet made contact with a publisher. The twelve-month stipend for this fellowship is $35,000. The Hench Post-Dissertation Fellow will be selected on the basis of the applicant's scholarly qualifications, the appropriateness of the project to the Society's collections and interests, and, above all, the
likelihood that the revised dissertation will make a highly significant book.

INTERNATIONAL WINTER SCHOOL ON FEDERALISM AND GOVERNANCE - LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN FEDERAL AND REGIONAL SYSTEMS

Not only in Europe, but all over the world local government faces complex challenges that question its traditional status in multi-level governance systems and indeed request a redefinition of its role. Engage in an ongoing worldwide dialogue on the future of local government in federal and regional systems!

A transnational project of the Institute for Studies on Federalism and Regionalism, EURAC, Bolzano/Bozen (Italy), the Faculty of Law and the School of Political Science and Sociology of the University of Innsbruck (Austria). It takes place under the auspices of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

The Winter School analyzes the phenomena of federalism, regionalism and multi-level governance from a legal and a political science perspective. Every edition pays special attention to a particular topic, which is approached in detail by legal scholars, political scientists and practitioners.

In the first edition in February 2010 the focus will be on the role of local government in federal and regional systems. The programme includes: Multi-level- governance - local government in international, supranational and comparative perspective - local self-government - regional government - intergovernmental relations in compound systems - policies in multi-layered systems - fiscal federalism.

Participants will have the opportunity to present a working paper during the Winter School. The best papers will be considered for publication.

University of Vienna, Call for Applications, Interdisciplinary Ph.d. Program Gender, Violence and Agency in the Era of Globalization

At the Faculty for Social Sciences in co-operation with the Faculties of Law, of Philosophy and Educational Sciences, of Cultural Studies and of Philosophical and Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna an interdisciplinary PhD-Program with 12 PhD-positions "Gender, Violence and Agency in the Era of Globalization" (GiK) will be established. The program will start on March 1st, 2010. The GiK offers a research intensive three year PhD-Program on a full time basis. Remuneration will amount to 1.199,10 Euro per month gross.

The interdisciplinary PhD-Program focuses on violent conflicts at territorial and social borders, on diverse forms of cultural and religious fundamentalism, on shifting responsibilities and power relations in nation-states as well as on new processes of the commodification of human bodies. Moreover, local and translocal strategies of alliances and national as well as transnational scales of belonging, empowerment and self-organization will be of major interest. The program will encourage research projects in four research areas:

1) constructing and deconstructing gendered geopolitical and social borders, i.e. trafficking, citizenship of migrants, domestic violence;
2) cultural diversity and fundamentalist responses, i.e. "cultural violence",
empowerment of migrant women;
3) transforming state power and violence, i.e. new wars, governmentalization of state power, transnational women's networks;
4) bodies in conflict, i.e. cosmetic surgery, reproductive medicine.

Violence and agency in globalization processes include economic, political, social, legal, epistemological and cultural dimensions and call for historical as well as for normative perspectives. One of the major aspects is studying the intersection of multiple differences and the structure of inequality, e. g. gender, class, ethnicity and sexuality.

Eligibility:

Students from all countries of origin who hold a university degree equivalent to an international MA or Austrian "Magister" in Law, History, Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, German Philology, Cultural Anthropology

Good knowledge of English and German is expected. In cases of limited knowledge of German, support will be offered within the framework of further education at the University of Vienna.

Applicants should have knowledge of gender theories and methodology. The dissertation topic must be directly related to one of the GiK's research areas.

They also provide a conduit to industrial and other external
partners.

*PhD position: Stability of confined water layers in hydrophobic nanochannels*

*PhD project*

The properties of water in the vicinity of hydrophobic surfaces are at the origin of many important and poorly understood phenomena. They play an crucial role in the solvation of hydrophobic molecules, attractive hydrophobic forces between macroscopic surfaces, the self-assembly of micelles and lipid membranes, and – last not least - in the folding of proteins and in the transport of water and ions through membranes, i.e. in some of the most central processes in living organisms. Despite the
relevance of the subject and the enormous amount of work in the field, many fundamental aspects are still controversial. simple estimate based on bulk properties shows that liquid water is thermodynamically unstable between two hydrophobic surfaces for separations of less than approximately 1µm. Nevertheless, confined water layers should remain stable down to a distance of about 1nm. This is generally attributed to excessive nucleation barriers for vaporization.

In this project, we want to study the stability of liquid confined water layers using a new experimental tool, namely hydrophobic nanochannels etched into glass with a thickness ranging from a few up to a few tens of nanometers. A Fabry-Pérot interferometer incorporated into the nanofluidic chip will allow for measuring the refractive index of the fluid in the channel as a function of both time and position. By varying the temperature and pressure we will force the liquid to evaporate and follow the appearance and growth of gas or vapor bubbles for various conditions (dissolved gas; dissolved ions; pH). To obtain additional information about the dynamics of the transition, we will follow temporal fluctuations of the refractive index (with MHz time resolution) as well as global electric properties of the
nanochannels.

*Requirements*

We are looking for a strong and highly motivated PhD student with a background in physics or physical chemistry. The practical work will be primarily experimental, requiring a high level of technical skills regarding high resolution optical measurements, fabrication, and general surface and sample preparation. Physical modeling of the results falls in the realm of thermodynamics of phase transitions and statistical physics.

Project description

The chair CAES of the University of Twente offers a job opening in the large European CATRENE project “TOETS”, on test solutions for Systems-on-Chip (SoC) and Systems-in-Package (SiP).

Our project's aim is to design dependable heterogeneous systems (SoC or SiP), which include vast digital resources, analog-digital and digital-analog blocks and (MEMS) sensors/actuators.

New CMOS technologies offer multiple embedded processors and other massive digital resources on chip. Nowadays, in heterogeneous systems, the testing of analogue and MEMS parts determine the majority of diagnosis and repair problems and costs. In safety-critical and heavy environmental condition applications, like electronics in medical and automotive applications, the dependability of these systems is of key importance.

Basic idea is to implement a high dependability of heterogeneous systems by applying both Built-In Self-Diagnostics (BISD) as well as Built-In Self-Repair

(BISR) using a combination of hardware and software, with a focus on MEMS IP (MEMS + associated MS circuits).

The planned activities are as follows:

· Investigation and choice of the target heterogeneous system

· Behavioural and structural modelling of MEMS IP and potential repair options

· The anticipated environment, and subsequent fault modelling of the IPs in
target system

· Investigation of the potential reuse of vast digital resources

· Heterogeneous fault simulation (VHDL-AMS) and verification of the dependable
heterogeneous system via BISD and BISR.

Relation to other projects

The project will run in conjunction with two other related projects in CATRENE ”TOETS” and FES “STARS” on the design of dependable heterogeneous systems.

What we ask

Candidates should have a M.Sc. degree in preferably Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, with background in one or more of the following areas: mixed-signal circuit and system (SoC) design, mixed-signal design and test tools, MEMS, signal processing.

Candidates should be fluent in English. An interview will be part of the selection procedure.

Candidates should have good system hardware skills, but not elude software solutions.

What we offer

We offer a full-time PhD position in a dynamic and international environment. The duration of the contract is four years. The gross salary will range from € 2.042,00 in the first year to € 2.612,00 per month in the fourth year.

PhD-researcher (new) metamaterials in PCB technology

The Electrical Engineering department of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) at the University of Twente (UT) is one of the three academic institutions in Electrical Engineering in the Netherlands. The Telecommunication Engineering and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) research group is embedded in the Electrical Engineering department.

The research is part of the multidisciplinary research institute Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (www.ctit.utwente. nl).

The Telecommunication Engineering and EMC research group of EEMCS/CTIT collaborate with the Technical University Delft in the Embedded Metamaterials/ Power Sandwiches project. In this project, we investigate a new approach to construct electronic systems that enables integration of power semiconductors, passive components, EMI filters and countermeasures in a "system in a package" generation of components. The Embedded Metamaterials/ Power Sandwich project follows a new design approach and
brings together a number of technologies:

- A new SMT-based manufacturing that lends itself for automated assembly.

- Embedded EMI filters and countermeasures (such as non-linear resistors) in the planar substrates, using a new type of materials: metamaterials.

- A new family of components that can be sandwiched between planar substrates, such as PCBs.

Two PhD researchers will collaborate. One PhD student will be supervised by Prof. J.A. Ferreira of the Delft University of Technology, the second PhD student will be supervised by Prof. F. Leferink and will do research on embedded EMI countermeasures using metamaterials.

The specific goals of UTwente are:

- Identify new (meta) materials that are suitable for a 3D layer-by-layer
construction;

- Investigate the implementation of these materials to counteract EMI, higher reliability and lower cost.

Common goals are:

- Design and optimization from a system integration point of view paying attention to electrical, EMI and thermal performance.

- To get the industry involved in a team effort to come to a better technology platform for power electronics.

This research may result in a breakthrough in conventional way of development and production of electronic circuits. The results should become available within many possible applications. Therefore many industrial entities, small and large, from different areas, are supporting this research. These industrial entities are active in mass consumer production, automotive, high-end professional, as well as production assembly lines.

We are currently looking for a PhD researcher (4 years) who will investigate the application of (new) metamaterials in PCB technology.

You have completed a relevant university degree (MSc level) or are about to graduate in an area that is relevant to our research. You like working in a team and have intellectual curiosity and knowledge of one or more of the described topics. Ph.D. Programme: Mathematical Methods in Natural Sciences (MMNS) aims to provide research programmes covering modelling, mathematical/numerical analysis and computer implementation/simulation of the investigated models. Each Ph.D. project is meant to provide a better understanding of certain phenomena arising from industrial innovations, natural or medical sciences. The ambition is to equip the students with the manifold qualifications expected from future leading researchers in academia and industry.

The field of specialization will be energy conversion with power electronics and solar cells. The position is currently located in Grimstad, Norway. The starting date is negotiable.

At present, the Faculty of Engineering and Science has a core group of more than 15 researchers in the field of mechatronics, including 4 Professors, 4 Associate Professors and 5 Research Fellows. The group is responsible for the BSc, MSc, and PhD programmes in Mechatronics at the University of Agder and has a comprehensive network of Norwegian and international partner universities. In addition, the Mechatronics group exploits synergies with the faculty’s renewable energy group, which, amongst other activities, works on applications of solar cell technology. Power Electronics is an example of a type of technology which is often included as a component in mechatronic systems and in systems for solar electricity production, whereas solar cells to a certain extent are used to power mechatronic systems.

The position may focus on one of the following projects:

Grid integration of solar cell technology
Stand-alone applications, e.g. in telecommunication systems
Solar-powered electric cars
Energy storage and smart grid technology for solar power stations
The successful applicant should have a master’s degree in electrical engineering or mechatronics, but applicants with a background in physics may also be considered. Applicants should have a good background in relevant subjects in electrical engineering, or demonstrate their ability and willingness to acquire such knowledge. The Research Fellow must meet the criteria for admission to the PhD programme at the University of Agder, and must be admitted to the programme within three months of appointment.

Personal suitability and the applicant’s ability and willingness to cooperate with researchers in neighbouring fields will be emphasized.

A high level of oral and written proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of a Scandinavian language is an advantage.

Appointment is made for a period of three years, alternatively four years with 25% of the time assigned to tasks at the faculty’s discretion. The Research Fellow is expected to complete a doctoral dissertation within the period of employment.

There may be opportunities for the Research Fellow to conduct research at external institutions or partner universities in Norway or abroad during the period of employment. The Research Fellow will be expected to publish scientific papers in English and participate in conferences as a part of his or her PhD education.

Fellowship Description:
Under the terms of the regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources, and taking into account the Scientific Research Grant Recipient Statute approved by Law 40/2004 of 18 August 2004, the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) hereby opens a call for applications for funding of the following types of individual grants:

Post Doctoral Grants (BPD)
These grants are intended for individuals who have already completed a doctoral degree, preferably within the last five years, for the purpose of carrying out advanced research in Portuguese or foreign scientific institutes of recognized merit.

Doctoral Grants (BD)
These grants are intended for individuals who hold a Licentiate’s, Master’s or other academic degree who have been accepted to a doctoral program in a university.

Fellowship Funding:
These grants will be funded by the Programa Operacional Potencial Humano of the QREN Portugal 2007-2013 and by national funds made available through the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education MCTES.

Important Details About Dates:
This call for applications is open between 12 May and 15 September 2009, and will have two evaluation cycles.
All applications sealed by 5 pm, Lisbon Time, on 16 June 2009 will be evaluated in the first cycle. In the second cycle, all applications sealed between the previous deadline and 5 pm, Lisbon Time, on 15 September 2009 will be evaluated.

Fellowship Applications:

Doctoral Grant (BD) candidates who have not yet completed the academic degree required for this type of grant may only apply during the first evaluation cycle if they declare that they will have obtained the degree by no later than 30 September 2008; they may apply during the second cycle if they declare that they will have obtained the degree by no later than 31 December 2008. If these expectations are not fulfilled, the grants will not be awarded.

Grants approved during the first evaluation cycle shall start no earlier than 1 October 2009; grants approved during the second evaluation cycle shall start no earlier than 1 January 2010.

Although this call for applications consists of two evaluation cycles, each applicant may submit only one application, which will be evaluated by a review panel from the scientific area indicated by the applicant (each candidate may apply to only one scientific area). If two applications are submitted, both will be canceled.

Fellowship Evaluation Procedure:
Only applications that have been sealed by the applicants will be evaluated. The evaluation will take into account the quality of the candidate, the plan of work and the host institution conditions. The review panel for each main scientific field, to which an evaluation guide will be distributed, will examine the corresponding applications, weigh the evaluation criteria and produce a ranked list of applicants.

Abstract:
Multi-modality is a very active field in human-robots interfaces development. In our department we are studying the multi-modality as a way to perform sensory substitution for tele-operation (and others) applications. This topic is concerned with the integration of the techniques we developed within our group in order to derive an adaptation scheme allowing to optimize the use of the available sensory channels in order to display efficiently any type of information on any type of human modality.

Requirements:

The candidate for this PhD position will be required to have a background in computer science and virtual/augmented reality.
